Last week, the Iranian ayatholla Khamanei called the election of Ahmadinejad ‘a divine victory’. Amen.

However, today he ordered an investigation into allegations of election fraud…

Logically I ask myself: does ayatholla Khamanei want to prove that God is fraudulent?

Charles Darwin’s sketch of the evolution tree

In 1837-1838 Charles Darwin drew in his notebook B a sketch of how evolution could take place.  How one species can evolve into another one, and how different species are/can be related.  This sketch embodies the evolutiontheory, one of the best documented theories in the scientific world.

It says:

“Case must be that one generation then should be as many living as now. To do this & to have many species in same genus (as is) requires extinction.
Thus between A & B immense gap of relation. C & B the finest gradation, B & D rather greater distinction. Thus genera would be formed. — bearing relation”

Yet, there is a small two-word text at the top of this page that is so exciting to me.  He writes down: ‘I think’.

This little sentence shows that at that moment, C. Darwin was still in the phase of making his theory.  But it also shows how  science should be done and  it shows his excellent scientific attitude i.e. always keep on doubting and searching.

Vanuit de onderzoeksgroep van Prof. Johan Braeckman (UGent) werd een website gemaakt (lic. Johan de Smedt) over evolutie en de evolutietheorie van Darwin.  De site bevat reeds antwoorden op héél veel vragen, maar indien je bijkomstige vragen hebt omtrent Darwin/evolutie(theorie), dan kan je hier ook terecht.  Je krijgt ze beantwoord door specialisten in hun vakgebied.  Zeer interessant zijn ook de vele spreekbeurten over dit onderwerp (en aanverwante aspecten), op verschillende locaties gefilmd, die je rustig thuis kan herbekijken.

Alvast veel plezier bij het (her)ontdekken van evolutie!

At first this cartoon on animal rights seems only to be funny and then it becomes very stupid.  But look at it for one minute more. Why is it so obvious that it is the dog that needs to be sacrificed?

Staat de E van EO voor ‘evolutionistisch’?

Dit jaar zal het 200 jaar geleden zijn dat Charles Darwin geboren werd.  In Nederland vond de evangelische omroep  (EO) het daarom goed om 3 belangrijke standpunten omtrent de theorie over evolutie volgens Darwin in de kijker te zetten.  Te gast:  Cees Dekker, gerenomeerd wetenschapper én gelovig, Tom Zoutewalle, wetenschapper én creationist, en Bas Haring, filosoof, publicist én ongelovig.

Het Darwinjaar bij het Elfde Uur van Andries Knevel kan je hier herbekijken:  op een goede 35 minuten hebt u begrepen wat de 3 mogelijke standpunten (evolutionistisch-creationistisch-theïstisch evolutionistisch) hieromtrent zijn.

Ik dacht aanvankelijk dat het een hilarisch debat zou worden.  Ten eerste was het eigenlijk geen debat: elk van de drie mag eerst uitleggen hoe hij over evolutie denkt, en daarna mogen elk van de twee andere enkele korte vragen stellen.   En het begon al met billenklets toen Tom Zoutewalle zei in de eerst 1ste minuut dat ‘de evolutietheorie in essentie de grootste wetenschappelijke dwaling is’.  Maar buiten dit standupcomedy-feit waren de drie interviews best goed, om niet te zeggen fantastisch: geen hilarische praat maar echt bijzonder interessant om te horen hoe verschillend mensen omgaan met de evolutietheorie van Darwin.  Bas Haring heeft héél duidelijk verwoord wat evolutietheorie van Darwin inhoudt en wat niét!

De drie sprekers balanceerden op een koord, elk verkeerd woord kon tegen hen gebruikt worden…vooral Cees Dekker, die zich niet kan permiteren om  evolutie te rediculiseren, doet zijn uiterste best om ook zijn geloofsgemeenschap niet tegen het hoofd te stoten.

Cees Dekker vroeg of het aanvaarden van evolutie voor Tom Zoutewalle zou betekenen dat hij zijn geloof zou verliezen.  Een spannend moment omdat indien positief beantwoord, zeer pijnlijk duidelijk wordt dat ontkenning van evolutie louter gedicteerd wordt door geloof in een leer die voor andere doeleinden is ontstaan dan ter verklaring van natuurfenomenen.  De geheime agenda van de creationist zou dus tendele ‘exposed’ zijn en maakt de situatie opnieuw hilarische en pure standupcomedy.  En ja! Tom Zoutewalle geeft toe.  Het interview was dus ook wat: oooh, zo schoon-tv.

Conclusie:  zéér goede interviews,  zéér goede interviewer,  informatief en goede tv. 

Blijft nog één vraag over: is de ‘E’ in EO nu voor ‘evangelisch’ of voor ‘evolutionistisch’?

Hugo en Rosa, Hugo och Rosa

Op 24 december, kerstavond van 2008 werd een dijk van een documentaire (2003) uitgezonden op Canvas.  Het gaat over een bejaarde Hugo en zijn zus Rosa, die de laatste 10 jaar van hun leven worden gevolgd.   Anno 2000  leven ze beiden nog op het Zweedse platteland, verstoken van electriciteit en eigenlijk van alles wat is ontstaan in de naoorlogse periode.  Ze zijn gelukkig samen, en mijmeren over vroeger.  Ze zijn bij de honderd en genieten van elke dag.  Totdaar het lieflijke van het verhaal.

Je voelt het aankomen: het mooie liedje kan niet blijven duren.  Hugo moet naar het ziekenhuis en Rosa kan niet alleen achterblijven.  Ze moet naar een rusthuis.  Er ontwikkelt zich een verhaal die elk van onze ouders zou meemaken:  zo oud worden en helemaal op het einde van hun leven nog volledig ondersteboven worden geschud, vooral psychologisch.  De zin ‘Ik wil naar huis’, klinkt ons zeer bekend in de oren.

Op het einde zit de 100 jarige Hugo bij zijn dode zus. Hij zingt een beetje.  Ze wordt afgelegd.  Hij staat even recht als ze de kamer wordt uitgedragen: hij ziet zijn zus na bijna 100 jaar samen geleefd te hebben nooit meer terug.  Zeer sterk in beeld gebracht!  De off-screen stem die dan volgt maakt de documentaire heel bijzonder, waarna je je realiseert hoe speciaal de mens eigenlijk is. 

Gelukkig kan je de superdocumentaire Hugo en Rosa nog herbekijken.  Doen!  Deze documentaire won de prijs Prix Europa 2003.

Scientific research and statistics on nine factors that determine your acceptance of evolution: ‘not true’ or ‘false’ so help me God…

A group of researchers in the USA and Japan performed research on the attitude toward the concept of evolution in USA, Japan and 32 European countries.  Their results are published in 2006 in the scientific journal Science.  The article can be downloaded here (see bottom of this post).

 ’Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals’ was asked  to the people, and they rated this question as ‘true’, ‘not sure’ or ‘false’.  Of all the USA citizens 60%  said that that statement was not true or false.  Except for Turkey, where approximately 70% said that is was not true or false, all European countries scored better with respect to acceptance of evolution.  Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, France and Japan scored the highest acceptance of evolution.

 The authors see 3 main raisons why Americans have more reservations on the concept of evolution in the context of a broad acceptance in Europe and Japan.

1.       In the USA, fundamentalism in belief is historically different from that in Europe.  The biblical literalist focus of fundamentalism in the USA sees Genesis as a true and accurate account of the creation of human life that supersedes any scientific finding or interpretation.   In Europe, that has more mainstream Protestant faith, Genesis is seen more as metaphorical, leaving no much of contradiction between their faith and the work of Darwin and other scientists.

2.       Evolution has been politicized in the USA in a manner never seen in Europe.  The Republican Party is using the issue of evolution as part of a platform to consolidate their support in southern and Midwerstern States.  Teaching of ‘creation science’ has been explicitly asked by this party.  In Europe, there is no major party that overtly uses opposition to evolution to gain votes.

3.       The knowledge of genetics (knowledge of DNA and concept of heredity; the authors call it ‘genetic literacy’) is positively correlated with acceptance of evolution.  Lack of this knowledge correlates with reservations on the concept of evolution.  Genetic literacy in the USA is not so good as in Europe.

 

  

The authors also investigated nine factors that could have an influence on your attitude on the acceptance of evolution.  Were investigated in USA and nine European countries:

Age (young or old), Gender (female or not), Education (high or low level of college-level science courses), Genetic  literacy (high or low, people were ranked after answering 10 questions about how heredity and DNA works), Religious belief (high or low, people were ranked in 4 categories according to their current religious belief), Attitude toward life (ranking in three categories according to their ideas about beginning of life and the moral and legal status of embryos), Belief in promise of science and technology (high or low, after scaling five items about how science can improve people’s life), Reservation about science and technology (high or low, after scaling 10 questions on the impact of science on life), Political ideology (scaling by means of 10 questions into ‘very liberal’ vs ‘very conservative’).

How to interprete this map?

All nine items are displayed.  If there is an arrow between two variables, then there’s a significant correlation between them.  This correlation can be negative or positive, it can be small or big.  This is done for the USA and for nine European countries.

For example: in the USA, the education level, defined by the scaling (see above) correlates with genetic  literacy. The correlation is positive, meaning if education is high, the genetic  literacy is high.  It is more correlated in Europe (0.43) than in USA (0.35).

The relationship between genetic literacy, defined by scaling (see above) is significantly correlated with religion, but only in the USA, not in Europe (because there is no arrow between the two items in the map of Europe).  The correlation is negative, meaning that the higher the genetic literacy is, the less religious people are.

Note that there is no significant correlation (arrow is absent) between political ideology and the attitude towards evolution in Europe, while there is one in USA. 

It is important to see that every item is itself related to (several) other items (with the exception of gender and age of course).  Your acceptance of evolution is therefore dependent on many parameters in your life.  For instance in the USA religion has a direct correlation with your attitude toward evolution, but the degree of your religious belief depends itself on your gender, age, education, genetic literacy (same as in Europe with the exception of genetic literacy).

 

The authors performed now a summary to see the TOTAL effect of the nine independent variables to predict your attitude toward evolution.  

You can see that in the USA religion (-0,42), pro-life beliefs (-0,31) and political ideology (-0,15)  (three things that have in fact nothing to see with the established scientific method that reveals the existence of evolution – evolution is a fact, just like the fact that the world is not flat and the bible is not a book of science)  all negatively controls your attitude on the acceptance of evolution.  In the USA the acceptance of evolution is twice as much negatively determined by belief, compared with nine European countries.

In conclusion: many people have a look in their bible first, before they can answer you the question if ‘Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals’.  Just like the authors conclude: science teachers, there’s a lot of work ahead!
